What To Do Before Your Plumber Arrives

Most of the damage from a plumbing emergency doesn’t happen in the first few minutes. Damage often occurs between the initial failure and the water being successfully shut off. While our emergency plumbers are racing to your doorstep, here is what you can do right now to limit the flooding and structural damage:

STEP 1
Find your main water valve and shut it off immediately.
In most homes it sits in the basement near the front of the house, close to where the water line comes in from the street. Turn it clockwise to close it.
STEP 2
If the problem is isolated to one fixture like a toilet or sink,
shut off the local stop valve underneath or behind that fixture instead of cutting water to the whole house.
STEP 3
Turn off electricity in any areas where water is present.
Go to the breaker panel and cut power to those rooms. Standing water and live electricity are a serious safety risk.
STEP 4
If you smell gas: do not flip any switches, do not use your phone inside the building.
Leave immediately, then call 911 and ATCO Gas at 1-800-511-3447 from outside. Do not go back in until emergency services clear the building.
STEP 5
If you have a sewage backup, open windows and doors
to ventilate the space before you do anything else.
STEP 6
Before any cleanup starts, take photos and video of all damage.
Your insurance claim depends on documentation of what happened before you touched anything.

How to Find and Shut Off Your Main Water Valve in Calgary

Finding your main shut-off is the single best thing you can do for your home before an emergency ever happens. In most local homes, you’ll find this valve in the basement near the front of the house (where the line enters from the street) or tucked away in your mechanical room.

Burst Pipe Repair

Burst pipes are the most common winter emergency in the city, and they tend to hit hardest during the deep cold snaps that push temperatures below -30°C. Pipes running along exterior walls, through unheated crawl spaces, garage walls, or near drafty windows are the most vulnerable. Calgary homes built before 1980 with minimal insulation are especially at risk. TipTop technicians stop the active leak and complete the permanent pipe repair on the same visit so you’re not left with a patch job and a callback.

Basement Flooding & Water Damage

Basement flooding can come from several places at once: a burst pipe, a failed sump pump, a sewer backup, a water heater giving out, or water coming through a foundation crack. The first job is always stopping the water source, and TipTop plumbers arrive equipped to find it and shut it down. One important note: TipTop handles the plumbing side. Drying out, mould remediation, and structural restoration are a separate scope handled by water restoration companies, and you’ll want to get one of those on the phone as well. Before anyone starts cleaning up, document everything with photos and video for your insurance claim.

Sewer Backup & Blocked Main Drain

The warning signs of a main sewer backup are hard to miss: multiple fixtures backing up at the same time, a sewage smell coming up through floor drains, or gurgling sounds when you flush or drain anything. Common causes include tree roots growing into the line, grease buildup over years, a collapsed section of pipe, or the city sewer surcharging during heavy rain and pushing back into your home. Until the blockage is cleared, don’t use any drains in the house. TipTop handles emergency drain clearing and camera inspection to find exactly what’s going on and where. No Hot Water Emergency

Losing hot water can mean a few different things: a tripped breaker, a pilot light that’s gone out, a failed thermocouple, or the tank itself giving up. TipTop works on all makes and models and carries common parts on every van so repairs can usually happen on the spot. If the tank is past saving, same-day hot water tank replacement is available. Gas Leak? Call 911 First

A gas smell is not a plumbing call. It is a 911 call, and TipTop will say that plainly because your safety matters more than the service call.
Once the scene is safe, TipTop’s licensed gas fitters can assess and repair the gas line. But that comes after.

Frozen Pipes

Call TipTop if you can’t find where the freeze is, if a pipe has already split, or if the frozen section is inside a wall where you can’t get to it. As a preventive measure during extreme cold snaps below -25°C, letting a slow trickle of cold water run from the tap furthest from your water meter overnight can keep pipes from freezing in the first place.

Understanding Emergency Plumbing Rates:
Why After-Hours Costs More

Only a handful of Calgary emergency plumber pages explain this honestly, so here it is plainly. Keeping a licensed plumber on-call around the clock, with a fully stocked van ready to roll at any hour, has real operational cost. The after-hours premium in the city typically runs 25 to 75% above daytime rates, and that’s consistent across reputable companies.

Here’s the other side of that math: every hour of active water damage adds to the bill. Drywall, flooring, and mould remediation can run anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 depending on how long water sat. A $400 emergency call at midnight is almost always cheaper than the damage from waiting eight hours for regular business hours. Calling is the financially smart move.

What to Look For When Calling an Emergency Plumber in Calgary

FAQs

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Calgary?

During business hours, expect a call-out fee of $50 to $300 plus hourly labour. After-hours and emergency service runs higher. Most common emergency repairs like a burst pipe, blocked drain, or toilet issue come to $250 to $1,600 including parts. Major jobs like water heater replacement or sewer line work run $500 to $5,000 or more. TipTop provides a written quote before starting any work so you know the number before you say yes.

When you call, you reach an on-call licensed plumber directly, not an answering service. During extreme cold snaps or periods of very high demand, response times may be slightly longer than usual.
Burst or frozen pipes, basement flooding, sewage backup, a complete loss of water supply to the home, gas-related plumbing issues after 911 and ATCO have cleared the scene, and a failed water heater in winter all qualify. A slow-draining sink or a dripping tap is not a plumbing emergency and can wait for a standard booked appointment.
  1. Shut off the main water supply right away (basement, near the front of the house).
  2. Cut power to any flooded areas at the breaker panel.
  3. Open taps to drain water still sitting in the pipes.
  4. Move valuables away from the water.
  5. Take photos and video of all damage before touching anything.
  6. Then call TipTop at (403) 931-2900.
TipTop applies an after-hours premium (typically 25%-75% above standard rates) to cover the cost of maintaining 24/7 on-call licensed plumbers and fully stocked vans. We provide written quotes before starting work. While calling at midnight involves a premium, it is significantly cheaper than waiting and risking $5,000-$50,000 in restoration costs from water damage.

A gas smell is NOT a plumbing call, it is a 911 emergency.

  2. Do not use your phone inside.

  4. Do not go back in until emergency services have cleared the building.
  5. TipTop’s licensed gas fitters handle gas line repairs after the scene is declared safe.
